About Daniel Robert Harper
Editor of Staten Island Advance 1936-1956.
Born in Reading, PA. Served as pastor of two United Evangelical churches in Reading area while attending Schuylkill Seminary (forerunner of Albright College). Served in the Army Air Service during World War I, then afterwards returned to Schuylkill as athletic director. Began working in the newspaper business for various papers in Scranton, Hazleton and Reading, before joining the Advance in 1932 as a rewrite man. Within four years, he was promoted successively to night editor, city editor and editor. Received annual inter-faith award from the Staten Island lodge of Bnai Brith in 1948.

It should also be mentioned that Dan Harper was awarded an honorary degree from Wagner College and served on the faculty of Columbia School of journalism. He also served as a civilian air spotter in World War II. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed oil painting in his retirement years.
