About Reverend Davenport Phelps

681. Rev, Davenport Phelps, b. Hebron, Ct., 12 Aug., 1755, m. about 1785, Catherine Tiffany. She was sister of Dr. Tiffany of Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, and daughter of Dr. Gideon Tiffany of Hanover, N. H., b. there 1769, d. 27 Nov., 1836, aged 66 years, 11 months.

Mr. Phelps removed with his father to New Hampshire in 1766, entered Yale at the age of fifteen, where he remained two years, then entered Dartmouth, where he graduated in 1775, and studied law. In 1793, Mr. Phelps, with Jarvis W. Wheelock, Esq., brother of the president of Dartmouth Col- lege, made a trip to upper Canada, and purchased a grant in the township of Glenford of 84,000 acres from Gov. Symcoe, whose friendship and confidence Mr. Phelps possessed in the highest degree, In 1793 and 1794, he, with others, removed their families to this township. Soon Gov. Symcoe was re- called to England, where he soon died, and a new administra- tion was appointed, who did not favor Gov. Symcoe's sale to Mr. Phelps and others. This purchase was put in litigation, Mr. Phelps purchasing some lands in Hamilton, Burlington Heights, where he resided while his property was in litiga- tion, which was finally decided against him. In 1800 he re- turned to the United States, settling in New York City, studied theology, and in 1801 was ordained into the Episcopal church. In 1805 was settled in Geneva, N. Y. He resided at various times in L/ymeaud Oxboro, N. H., Hartford, Ct., and Mon- treal, Can.

He is refered to in Stone's Life of Brant, of whom he was a particular friend, though all the statements referred to in Sione's book are not true. The above records from his son, William Alexander Phelps. Mr. Phelps died 27 Jan., 18 13, in his 58th year,
