The following is from the Fairfield High School Alumni Association Newsletter, Winter 2014: "The area was originally called the Town of Corey and the name was later [1913] changed to the City of Fairfield...Corey Fairfield was a meticulously planned community to provide an industrial site with housing for workers and a family oriented environment with parks, churches as well as community services close to the workers' jobs. The development was monitored from 1910 to 1919. ... In 1907, U. S. Steel purchased the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company.... Railroad lines had already been established. The land also provided space for industrial housing for employees. Workers would want to bring their families to an area with sanitary, pleasant surroundings. This the Town of Corey was conceived and initially drawn up by George H. Miller."
