  • John Fettiplace (1527–28 December 1580)[1] was an English politician and landed gentleman during the Tudor period.
  • John was the son of Edmund Fettiplace of Besselsleigh in Berkshire (now Oxfordshire) and his wife, Margaret, daughter of John Mordaunt, 1st Baron Mordaunt.[1]
  • He was the Member of Parliament in 1558 for Berkshire.[2] He was also appointed High Sheriff of Berkshire for 1568 and 1577.
  • He died in 1580. He has a fine effigial church monument in Appleton Church.
  • He had married twice: firstly Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir Anthony Hungerford of Down Ampney in Gloucestershire and secondly Jane, the daughter of John Covert of Slaugham in Sussex and widow of Sir Francis Fleming, with whom he had two sons and two daughters. His eldest son was Bessels Fettiplace, the father-in-law of Elinor, Lady Fettiplace who, in later centuries, became well known as the author of a rare 17th-century manuscript household management and recipe book.
