About Elias Eliahou Levy
Courtier and Royal merchant - a man of wealth, influence and talent. He played a role in negotiating the first Barbary Treaty with the USA. Served as one of 7 Jewish undersecretaries of the Moroccan Royal Treasury.
Royal merchant and counselor to the Sultan of Morocco (Sidi Muhammad, 1757-1790) prior to the Sultan's death.
It is reported that as counselor, Ha-Levi ibn Yuli informed Sultan Sidi Muhammad III that his life was in danger and there was an attempt to overthrow him by his son. The son was thrown in prison, but after the Sultan died several years later, the son was released to take the throne. He was so angered that he vowed to kill all Jews. Rampant anti-semitism resulted forcing the family to flee to Gibralter for their lives.
