About Elizabeth Sweeney

Not the same as Elizabeth Eve

Biography

A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA. DAR Ancestor # A111749

Moses Sweeney was born near Belfast, Ireland. He came to America with his father, Charles (c. 1754¬ -1766), when he was about four years old. He married Elizabeth Johnson who was from Antrim, Ireland, or from New Jersey. Her family is said to be cousins of Richard M. Johnson, Vice President of the United States under President Martin Van Buren. There is some evidence that they settled in Virginia, and built a mill along the Slate River (now Buckingham Co, VA), had several children there and then relocated to what is now Lincoln County, Kentucky.

Extracted from Moses Sweeney – Early Settler of Lincoln County < link > BY KENTUCKY KINDRED GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2020

Moses Sweeney, born in 1734, was 53 years old when he purchased the land from Bulger. Unfortunately, very little is known about the early life of Moses Sweeney except that he was born in Belfast, Ireland, and came to America at a young age. Moses, apparently living in Virginia, served as a private during the Revolutionary War ….

When he moved to Lincoln County, several of the younger children remained at home with Moses and his wife Elizabeth Johnson. Elizabeth was very likely related to Noiel Johnson who was an early settler along the Hanging Fork. Noiel’s gravestone at McCormack’s Church has the earliest recorded death date in the cemetery; having been born January 9, 1729, and died December 6, 1802. …

Moses and his wife had at least fourteen children whose descendants later spread out into the western frontier. The known children were Job, Shepherd, John, Charles, Joseph, Daniel, William H., Edmund, Harvey, Goldsby, Celah, Patsey, Tyre and Milly.
