About Elizabeth Lyon

ELIZABETH LYON (aka ELSPETH LYON)

Spurious Pedigrees

1

According to the Glasgow historian, John McUre, Archibald Lyon, Merchant in Glasgow, and his wife Margaret Dunlop, had a daughter named Margaret Lyon who married a Glasgow merchant named John Young History of Glasgow: 102 This is quite wrong, however. It was in fact Elizabeth Lyon, here treated, who married John Young. Glasgow Protocols XI: 3607

2

The ancestry of Elizabeth Lyon, here treated, has not so far been identified. In this regard, however, the following observations may be worth mentioning. Archibald Lyon, the father claimed for her by John McUre, died before 10 November 1587. Ibidem: 3076 Elizabeth Lyon was still alive on this date, but because Archibald Lyon had no sons to succeed him, his heritable property passed to his three surviving daughters, that is Marion Lyon, the eldest surviving daughter of his first marriage, Jonet Lyon, the second surviving daughter of his first marriage, and Helen Lyon, the only daughter still living of the second marriage, Glasgow Protocils X: 3094 none of whom are mentioned in John McUre's history. Elizabeth Lyon, here treated, was not one of the heirs-portioners of Archibald Lyon. It seems quite unlikely, therefore, that she could be his daughter. History of Glasgow: 102

Her Last Will and Testament

Elizabeth Lyon, here treated, made her last will and testament at Glasgow on 26 April 1626 and probably died there on or before 30 April 1626. She nominated her son Thomas Young to be her only executor and left her clothing to her three daughters, who are not named. Confirmation was granted to Thomas Young on 1 May 1627.
