Born in Paris, France, she was raised in New York City and on Long Island, N.Y. Mrs. Frelinghuysen was an accomplished amateur golfer and one of the founders of the Garden State Women’s Golf Association. She also served on the board of the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association. She was a longtime board member of the Somerset Hills YMCA in the Basking Ridge section of Bernards Township and served as honorary co-chair of its capital campaign. She had lived in Far Hills for more than 60 years. Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Joseph S. Frelinghuysen; her four children, Margaret F. Kurzman of New York City, Joseph S. Frelinghuysen Jr., of Pottersville, Susan F. Van Roijen of Orlando, Fla., and Barbara F. Israel of New York City; 10 grandchildren; John, Joy, Nicholas, Katherine, David, Victoria, Valaer, Peter, Emily and Wendy; and seven great-grandchildren. She was the sister of Margaret L. Frost of Long Island, N.Y., and the late Francis C. Lawrence. Her father, Charles Lanier Lawrance, designed the Wright Whirlwind engine that flew Charles Lindbergh to Paris. Mrs. Frelinghuysen witnessed Lindbergh’s takeoff from Roosevelt Field, Long Island, on the first solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927. Her mother, Emily Margaret Gordon Dix Lawrance, was the daughter of the Rev. Morgan Dix, rector of the Trinity Church in New York City. Her father-in-law, Joseph S. Frelinghuysen, was a U.S. Senator. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at the Church of St. John on the Mountain in Bernardsville. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Church of St. John on the Mountain, 379 Mount Harmony Road, Bernardsville, N.J., 07924; or to the Somerset Hills YMCA, 140 Mount Airy Road, Basking Ridge, N.J. 07920. Arrangements are by the Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home, 101 South Finley Ave., Basking Ridge.
