Emily Elizabeth Gentry was born in Mundon, Essex, England to Samuel Gentry and Elizabeth Davis. She and her parents came to the United States and joined the Leonard G. Rice Company. The company of 500 under Leonard Rice began its journey from the outfitting post at North Platte, Nebraska on 8 August 1867 and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley October 1867.
Emily married Henry John Somsen 25 July 1877 in Echo, Summit County, Utah. They had seven children. Emily died in Salt Lake City, Utah.
