Biography

Ephriam and Asenath were the progenitors of the largest Nova Scotia family of Churchills.

1780 - US GenWeb Military Records indicate he may have served in The American Revolution and this is quite possible as he would have been age sixteen years when the Revolution started; " Capt. Packard's Company, Colonel Carey's Regiment, alarm on July 1780, eleven days in Rhode Island ". 1783-84 - He moved to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia at the close of The American Revolution in 1783 or 1784 and settled first just south of the town. History of the County of Yarmouth by John Roy Campbell - page 112 states that he arrived in 1784 from Plymouth and settled opposite Murphy's Bridge. 1785 - He married Asenath Hibbard in 1785 at his age 26 and her age 17. Later it appears he purchased four lots of land and inherited an additional lot to add to his original holdings north of the town at Barne's Pond. One of the lots was at the head of the Cheggogin marsh. Barne's Pond was also called 'The Ponds'; also called First Lake; now known as Lake Milo. Second Lake at Dayton, on the road to Hebron, bordered the family's properties as well. Starting at about Milton Corner the first property was that of Thomas Flint, then the property of Eleazar Hibbard, father of Asenath, and then Ephriam and Asenath's property. Their properties were on the east side of Barnes Lake and the east side of the second pond. A grant of 1785 was described as being opposite Murphy's Bridge on "The Ponds" road. This is now the location of the bridge accessing St. Joseph's Villa. The property was considered to be very picturesque at that time in history and James Murphy was the original owner of the land on the other, west, side of the lake. 1786 - Their first son Zaccheus was born in 1786. They built and lived in the first timber and clapboard house in the area, overlooking "The Ponds". This house which was very large for it's time, was used not only as their private residence, but also as a school, church and courtroom. Over two centuries old in 2002, the house is still standing and in a remarkably good state of repair. Apparently Ephriam and Asenath were affluent in the community. Ephriam was listed as a farmer, ' Planter ', in Nova Scotia census records. His land grant extended along Lake Milo, The Ponds, to at least the Brooklyn Road, now called the New Road, and also back to Brooklyn, then called " Squirreltown ", where later a mill was owned and operated by his son Walter Churchill. The foundation of the mill can still be seen handy to the bridge at Churchill's Lake. This is also a junction leading to the present day Small Gains Rd. It is interesting to note that there was a large milling operation at 'Milltown", now Milton. It is likely Ephriam and son Walter also used the waterways of 'The Ponds' to bring down the logs to Milton. 1793-94 - 1793/94 - Census of Poll Tax Yarmouth N.S. - Ephriam Churchill; 0 pds.; 2 shillings; no pence. Additional pieces were annexed in 1868 and 1960, enlarging it to over five times its original size. The Churchill families have been well respected and highly influential in Yarmouth's history, and were particularly well known for their sea captains and involvement in shipping. 1827 - Census of Shelburne County and Yarmouth Township: Mrs. ? Their son, William, was enumerated as he inherited a large portion of the original grants. His sons Thomas, Rufus and Zaccheus were original grant holders in the Darlings Lake, Cheggogin and Sanford Yarmouth Co. areas. Their descendants for the most part were seafarers and farmers or a combination of both. Another graveyard, the Darlings Lake Cemetery is located at Darling's Lake, as well as ' Anchorage ' the mansion built by Aaron Flint ' Rudder ' Churchill. Aaron Flint was a grandson of Ephriam and Asenath. Many of Ephriam and Asenath's descendants were very successful farmers; but many more were sea captains, politicians, entrepreneurs, ship builders and mariners ' in The Glorious Days of Sail ". There are twelve of his descendants registered with Master Mariner certificates at the National Archives in Ottawa. They were masters of large sailing vessels and travelled all over the world. Many more are associated with the sea and although not master mariners have been recorded as captains........
