Khandallah, Wellington, New Zealand

Mr. Frank Jenner Brooker, a retired civil servant and a very wellknown resident, of Khandallah. died suddenly a short distance from his home at 17 Lucknow Terrace, last evening. He had gone to his garage to got his car, and he was found dead by the side of the garage a little later. He was 64.
Born in Christchurch.. Mr. Brooker was a descendant of one of the earliest settlers of the province. He began his career with the Post and Telegraph Department at Christchurch in 1890. Later, he was placed in charge of the Money Order and Savings Bank branch. He held a position as postmaster at Oamaru before his transfer, in 1916, as accountant to the Department of Internal Affairs in Wellington. He was associated with the distribution of war relief funds and at one time he was inspector of totalisators. In 1925 he was appointed to form the Stores Control Board and he was secretary of it until his retirement from the service in 1933. He had since lived in retirement at Khandallah.
He was a notable gardener and he was both a member of the Wellington Horticultural Society and president of the Khandallah society. He had also considerable skill as a chess player, and recently was elected president of the Ngaio Chess Club for the twentyfirst consecutive year. At one time he was a well-known member of the Canterbury Chess Club.
Mr. Brooker's interest in sport began in his youth and he retained a keen appreciation of sporting activities until his death. He had the distinction of being one of the tallest forwards to represent New Zealand at Rugby. He played for the Merivale Club, and from 1893 onwards he was a regular member of the Canterbury team. In 1897 he was chosen to tour Australia with a ieam captained by the late Mr. Alf Bayly. His playing days were contemporary with, some of the greatest in Canterbury history, and by the judicious use of his great height in lineout play and by the type of rugged following-up characteristic of the best
in New Zealand forward play he won a reputation as a player of considerable ability. He was also an oarsman, I winning several pair-oared races for the Union Club in Christchurch.
Mr. Brooker is survived by Mrs. Brooker, formerly Miss Eleanor Ellison, of Opawa, Christchurch, and by six children, Messrs. L. E. and P. M. Brooker, of Wellington, Mr. D. Brooker, Auckland, and Misses Marjory, Rona, and Grace Brooker, of Wellington.
