About Frederick James Given

Fred Given was a hard working forward who with his above average size for his era of around 1.83m and 86kgs in weight excelled in lineout play.

From the famous old Dunedin club, Alhambra, he played 34 times for Otago, a significant tally in those seaons, between 1895 and 1905. Hewas in the Otago side which in 1901 beat the touring New South Welshmen 5-0.

In 1903, in which season he was also a South Island representative, Given was chosen at the age of 27 for the New Zealand team (the All Black nickname had yet to be bestowed) which toured Australia.

He performed admirably, playing in nine matches and scoring a try against Combined Western Districts at Bathurst. He appeared in some of the important games against New South Wales (twice) and Queensland and missed only two matches though one of these was the full international, the first played by New Zealand, against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Given, who occasionally captained Otago, played his last major match when in 1905 he was in a combined Otago-Southland side which gave a fine forward effort to hold the All Blacks just before they left for Britain to a 10-all draw.

A plumbing inspector, Given appears to have had a coaching role with the Alhambra club after his retirement.
