About Galfridus de Crawford, {Fictional}

The connection of the Crawfords to a Danish line is erroneous.

Per 'The Peerage of Scotland' compiled by George Crawford: "Dominus Galfridus de Crafurd is the firft I have found using this Sirname in the Time of King Malcolm IV and King William (Chartulary of the Abbacy of Arbroth in the Lawyers Library, M.S.) who is frequently witneffing the pious Deeds of this laft Prince to the Religious of Arbroath, and feems to have had fome Relation to the Court under that good King."

John, stepson of Baldwin de Biggar (ancestor of the Earls o f Wigton), possessed c1153 the northern part of the territo rial Barony of Crawford, later called Crawfordjohn, and too k the surname Craufurd. [Burke's Peerage]

Note: Burke's would have John born a little earlier than I , but the later birth date was required to fit him into th e ancestry portrayed on several Crawford family websites . See notes under Thor Sweynsson.

http://crawfordshistorylesson.blogspot.com/2007/06/clan-crawford.html :

"Galfridus Swaneson's grandson is known as Dominus Galfridus de Crawford in the records of donations in 1179 to Kelso Abby."

"But it is Galfridus Swaneson's secondary branch from Crawfordjohn Parish that carried the surname and the Chief's Arms in the time since 1248. It isn't until after David Lindsay took control of the Barony in 1248 we learn that John Crawfurd still had claim to a portion of the Barony, Crawfurdjohn Parish. This is the primary evidence that 4 generations before John Crawfurd and David Lindsay the Barony was divided between Galfridus Swaneson's sons, Hugh and Reginald. "

Notes ◦Some sources show this Galfridus to be son rather than son-in-law of Swane Thorson of Crawford.

His marriage is reported by several web sites. Some indicate that Galfridus's wife was a legitimate daughter of Earl David but this is not supported by information known about Earl David whose legitimate descendants became claimants for the throne of Scotland and so have been studied carefully.
The connections between the branches of Crawfordjohn, Loudoun, Auchenames, Kilbirnie, and Kerse & Drumsey are reported differently by different sources. The following seems to be a reasonable 'compromise' between them but should not be viewed as completely reliable.
