George Brown Martin, (grandson of John Preston Martin), a Senator from Kentucky; born in Prestonsburg, Floyd County, Ky., August 18, 1876; moved with his parents to Catlettsburg, Boyd County, Ky., in 1877; attended the public schools and graduated from Centre University, Richmond (now at Danville), Ky., in 1895; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1900 and commenced practice in Catlettsburg, Ky.; general counsel and director of the Big Sandy & Kentucky River Railway Co.; vice president, Ohio Valley Electric Railway Co.; director, Kentucky-Farmers Bank of Catlettsburg; county judge of Boyd County in 1904; member of the Council of National Defense for Kentucky in 1917; appointed major in the Judge Advocate General’s Department of the United States Army, but did not serve, having been appointed Senator; appointed on September 7, 1918, as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Ollie M. James and served from September 7, 1918, to March 3, 1919; was not a candidate for election to the full term; chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of Agriculture (Sixty-fifth Congress); resumed the practice of law in Catlettsburg, Ky., where he died November 12, 1945; interment in Catlettsburg Cemetery.
