About George Thomas Nicholson
George Thomas Nicholson married Anne Smith [1785-1854], the daughter of William Smith and Frances Coape. Waverley Abbey House was the home of the George and Anne Nicholson. Founded in 1128, Waverley Abbey was the first Cistercian Monastery in England and thrived as a community until its dissolution by Henry VIII. Waverley Abbey House was built subsequently out of materials from the Abbey, the ruins of which are still standing in its grounds. In the 19th Century the house passed into the hands of George Nicholson, uncle of Florence Nightingale, and a frequent visitor was Sir Walter Scott whose ‘Waverley Novels’ took their name from the Abbey. During the first world war Waverley was the first country house to be given for use as a military hospital, caring for over 5000 wounded soldiers. In 1983 CWR bought the property for use as a Christian conference and retreat centre and began the process of restoring the house to the excellent standard you see today. In 1999 they opened Waverley up to the wider community and in 2000 Waverley Learning was established to make the special spirit of Waverley available to the business community.
