About George Francis Proteau
George Proteau was a civilian working on Wake Island when the Japanese overran the island just days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was taken to Sasebo prison in Japan where they were forced to work on the construction of Soto dam, mixing cement and digging up rocks. The men endured several winters dressed only in the light weight clothes they were captured in on tropical Wake island. They suffered many beatings at the hands of their guards, and disease and malnutrition were widespread. The prisoners subsisted on thin soups and an occasional piece of fish. Many died of pneumonia and dysentery.
