About Gideon Francois Steyn

LOSS TO WINBURG 20 September 1926 Mr Gideon Francois Steyn When on Monday evening it was made known that Mr. Gideon Francois Steyn had passed away, the tidings were received with universal regret, for he had stood high in the esteem of all. Since the termination of the South African war he had lived in Winburg, and was known by all as one of the old stock sturdy of character, honest, of a kindly disposition, and a man whose word could be trusted. Born on September 19, 1848, in the Swellendam district, he attained the age of 78 years. His was a varied career. In his young days, when the Kimberley diamond fields were opened, he was one of the pioneers, but luck was against him, and he left the fields to be a teacher at farm schools in the Free State. He continued this work for 15 years and during that time got married to Miss Anna Botha, from Grahamstown, she predeceased him three years ago. At the outbreak of the South African War he Joined one of the commandoes and was taken prisoner at the surrender of General Marthinus Prinsloo. Imprisoned at Ceylon, he returned to South Africa after peace was declared. The family came to Winburg and stayed here ever since. He was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church, and served many years as deacon and elder. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, and was largely attended. The service in the church was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Becker, assisted by the Rev. Messrs Klepper, Hofmeyr and de Kok. Mr. Hofmeyr also played the Dead March in Saul" on the organ. Mr. Hofmeyr came from Heilbron for the funeral. THE WREATHS. Floral tributes were received from the following. The Children.
