Giselbert (Gilbert II) FitzOsbern de Breteuil, bishop of Evreux

Bishop of Evreux (évêques d'Évreux) 1071-1112

Conflicting sources credit him with different parents. Charles Cawley and the Foundation for Medieval Genealogy place him as the son of Osbern d' Arques; however, if this is true, the dates are very compressed since he would have to have been quite young to become a Bishop in order to fit into the window for being this Osbern's son.

French Wikipedia cites the work of Pierre Bouet and Francois Neveux (which has also been digitized here; see below) to place GIslebert as the son of Guillaume fitzOsbern (the uncle of Osbern de Arches) and Adeliza de Tosny, which then puts him back a generation and allows him to have been a bit older, born at least before 1040:

Gilbert II fils Osbern (Gislebertus) : 1071-1112 [these are the years of his service as Bishop]

Gilbert était le fils de Guillaume fils Osbern, comte de Breteuil, grand sénéchal de Normandie, et d’Alice de Tosny. Il appartenait au clergé de Lisieux en qualité d’archidiacre et de chanoine. Il remplit en 1066 une mission pour le duc Guillaume auprès du pape Alexandre II qui apprécia ses qualités.

Gilbert fut un grand prélat qui gouverna pendant quarante-deux ans son diocèse. Il mena à bien la construction de sa cathédrale, qui fut dédicacée en 1076. C’est lui qui consacra Guillaume Bonne-Ame archevêque de Rouen en 1079 et qui, lors des funérailles de Guillaume le Conquérant à Saint-Étienne de Caen, prononça l’oraison funèbre de l’illustre prince. Après avoir assisté au concile de Clermont en 1095, il prit la croix avec Robert Courteheuse et gagna la Sicile en compagnie d’Odon de Conteville, évêque de Bayeux. En février 1097, il présida à Palerme aux funérailles d’Odon en présence du comte Roger de Sicile.

Il mourut le 29 août 1112 et fut inhumé dans sa cathédrale.

Orderic Vitalis records that, after the death of “Guillelmo Ebroicensium episcopo”, “Balduinus ducis capellanus” was appointed and was bishop for seven years, dated to 1070, and was in turn succeeded by “Gislebertus Osberni filius canonicus et archidiaconus Lexoviensis” who was bishop for more than 30 years[66]. Bishop of Evreux [67].
