Book: The life sage and stories of Harvey-Cisler-Gerstenberger-Mosher: and some related lines" by Lois Gerstenberger HarveyUS/Can Book Area 929.273hl

"The name METZINGER in German means 'butcher.' This name originated from the name METZGER, and may have first been used in the town of Metz, Lorraine, France, which once was German territory. The traditional story, however, of the Metzinger, Motsinger, Matsinger, Mottsanger name of Swiss-German origin is that three Metzger brothers who lived in Lorraine were left a great deal of land and money by a relative. One of the brothers manipulated the other two out of their share, and disappeared into Holland or Switzerland, where he changed his name to 'Meizinger.' About 1900 there reportedly was an unclaimed fortune left in Holland because no heirs could be found named 'Meizinger' and the money was used by the Holland government in their orphans fund.

"The MOTSINGER family has been in the U.S. since 1735.Virkus' First Families of America, Vol. 4, p. 303 has the notation 'Jacob Motsinger (b.1700) from Germany, 1735, settled in PA; Felix (1727-1791) removed from PA, to Rowan County, NC, 1776, served in American Revolution.

...From these beginnings in America we have been able to trace this line forward. We find that the Motsingers migrated from Pennsylvania to North Carolina to Washington County, Indiana; to Fulton County, Illinois; and some of them on to Iowa and Missouri. Beginning with the immigrant ancestor, what is known about the Motsinger branch which connects with the Harvey line is as follows:

"JACOB MOTSINGER was born in 1698 in Metz, duchy of Wertemberg, Germany. According to 'German Pioneers of Pennsylvania, Vol. 2, p. 146, by Strassburger & Hicke, recorded on the list of 'Switzer' who arrived at the port of Philadelphia, May 29, 1735, aboard the ship 'Mercury' were Jacob Matsinger, age 37, and his son Felix, age 7. Not a great deal is known about the immigrant, Jacob I, except that he probably lived in the Philadelphia area and was possibly killed in an Indian raid about 1762-63 there."

The church records of the baptism of Hans Jacob show the witnesses were Herman Rhein and Elizabeth Fissler. See LDS microfilm No. 996465 Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche Marthalen (Zurich) Taufen, Hieraten, Tote 1686-1794 Konfirmanden 1686-1719.

As recorded in "The Hartford Democrat and Aberdeen Enterprise (MD) (no date is included) "Letter Box: To the Editor:

"I am proud to tell you that you have living in Aberdeen a direct descendant of one of the boys who fought with Francis Marion in South Carolina.

"Mr. Armand Val(unreadable) Motsinger, a chemical engineer of Aberdeen, MD, has been accepted for membership in the Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution by right of his descendant of the Revolutionary Patriots, Felix Motsinger, the father, who operated among the Tories of South Carolina as the eyes of "The Swamp Fox" and Jacob Motsinger, the son, age 14, who fought with Francis Marion, the swift legs of the Swamp Fox.

"The father, 48 years of age, was a valuable procurer of food, supplies and information (SPY) for The Swamp Fox, Francis Marion depended upon the fathers of the boys he had fighting for him to strike against the tories and escape as the British General Ferguson has 4,000 Tories operating against him while Tartleton was always on his heels. Francis Marion at the time the Motsinger father and son were operating with him never had over 35 men in his Glorious Army, the only men for a long time fighting for the cause of Liberty in North and South Carolina.

"Frederick M. Knorr, Registrar Maryland Society Sons of the American Revolution
