About Henriette von Württemberg, Gräfin von Württemberg
also known as Henriette d'Orbe and Henrietta von Mömpelgard
Henriette d'Orbe- Montfaucon ( 1385 - 1444 ) or Henriette de Montbéliard , countess of Montbéliard , brought, through her marriage to Eberhard IV of Württemberg , the county of Montbéliard to the house of Württemberg .
Biography
She was the granddaughter of Étienne de Montfaucon , Count of Montbéliard (see the genealogy table in the article Richard III ). Étienne had married his eldest son Henri, Lord of Orbe , to Marie de Châtillon, Viscountess of Blaigny . Henriette d'Orbe-Montfaucon was the eldest of their four daughters.
After the death (1394) of his wife (died in childbirth during the birth of the last daughter), Henri d'Orbe remarried with Béatrix von Furstemberg . From their union three children were born. Henri d'Orbe disappeared during the crusade against Sultan Bazajet ( Battle of Nicopolis in September 1396). Her father, Étienne de Montfaucon , who no longer had a direct heir, betrothed Henrietta as a child to Eberhard IV of Württemberg (1397). The engagement took place at the Château de Montbéliard when her grandfather had just died. Henri, son of Jean II de la Roche-Saint-Hippolyte(fief neighboring the county of Montbéliard), was appointed guardian of the four daughters of Henri d'Orbe.
Concerning Henriette's three sisters, Jeanne was engaged to Louis de Chalon-Arlay , son of the Prince of Orange, her cousin; she brought as a dowry the great barony of Montfaucon. Agnès was destined for Thiébaud VIII , lord of Neufchatel-en-Bourgogne whose family held Blamont and the region of Pont de Roide. Finally, Marguerite was engaged to Humbert de Villersexel , the own son of Henri de la Roche-Saint-Hippolyte who held the four girls in guardianship. All these marriages took place later, because all of them were still young.
Marriage of Count Eberhard IV and Henriette Countess of Montbéliard.
Henriette d'Orbe's marriage to Eberhard IV of Württemberg took place in 1407, but the exact place and circumstances are unknown. However, it is difficult to deviate from Stuttgart. Henriette had brought her possessions in the wedding basket: the county of Montbéliard and its seigneuries; fiefs, such as Granges, Clerval, Passavant, Etobon , Porrentruy , with the fiefs of La Roche Saint-Hippolyte, as well as the lands of Franquemont (Goumois, on the edge of the Swiss border). His inheritance was added to that of Württemberg which brought the seigneury of Riquewhir, Ferrette, and the county of Horbourg in Alsace.
The County of Montbéliard was not a Württemberg vassalage ; he was hereditarily attached to that of Württemberg through the marriage of Henriette, while remaining his equal: he retained all his rights, his habits and customs, as well as his language (German was never imposed).
Eberhard IV was, in fact, the first Württembergeois prince who became Count of Montbéliard . When he died in 1419, Henrietta continued to rule Württemberg and all its possessions alone.
After being "deposed" from Württemberg by her two sons, she returned to the country of Montbéliard, and died in 1444 at the Château d' Étobon (near Héricourt, Haute-Saône) at the age of 57 . During the last years of her life, she gave on more than one occasion proofs of her affection for the inhabitants of this small village, whose descendants kept an unalterable memory for a long time.
Relatives :
Henri II de Montfaucon (1360-1396), son of Etienne de Montfaucon (1325-1397) and Marguerite de Chalon-Arlay (1333-1392);
Marie de Châtillon (1365-1394), daughter of Gaucher de Châtillon (1330-1404), Viscount of Blaigny and Jeanne de Coucy.
Descendants
Eberhard IV and Henriette had three children:
Anne of Württemberg (1408-1471). His mother tried to assign him the county of Montbéliard in her will. His brothers violently opposed it. Anne married Count Philip von Katzenelnbogen in 1422.
Louis IV of Württemberg (1412-1454)
Ulrich V of Württemberg (1413-1480).

The legend will make her the replacement of Father Christmas and Saint Nicolas under the name of Aunt Arie or Airie in the Pays de Montbéliard. Many tales or legends have been written about him.
