About Howard EUGENE Rice
Howard Rice joined the army in 1935 after hopping a freight car to Chicago.He met Violet in Battery Park in lower manhattan.Violet lived on Rector St.with her mother Nazira,her father Anthony her sisters Eleanor and Jesse and her younger brother John.At the time the lower part of Manhattan was the home of manyLebanese/syrian families before they eventually settled in downtown bklyn.At the time Howard and Violet met Howard was stationed at Ft.Jay in New York Harbor.Howard was shipped overseas and for the duration of the second world war participated in the invasions of Sicily,Italy and North Africa He was awarded the Bronze Star and many campaign medals and after WW2 was over and he returned home he went on to serve in the Korean conflict and was there for two years.He retired from the U.S.Army on May 31,1958
