Jacob Cloward, Jr. was born 19 July 1828 in Pottsville, Chester, Pennsylvania to Jacob Cloward, Sr. (b. 17 May 1790, North Mildford, Cecil, Maryland; m. 1815, Bucks, Pennsylvania; d. 5 Dec 1851, Provo, Utah, Utah) and Catherine Ann Pluck (b. 19 Jun 1795, Montgomery, Bucks, Pennsylvania; d. 5 May 1878, Salem, Utah, Utah). He was the seventh child and fourth son born to this union. His siblings were Catherine Ann, Charlotte R., Daniel Henry, William H., Thomas Poulson, James Mason, Albert Wilson (died as an infant), Hannah Jane, and Eliza Ann.

  • The Cloward family moved many times as the birth of the children is in four different places. The census of 1840 shows the family still living in New Castle, Delaware and in 1844 they moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. Between the years 1840 and 1850, Jacob, Jr., Jacob, Sr., Thomas P., James Mason, and Eliza Ann were baptized.
  • At nineteen years old, Jacob Jr. went with the Jedediah M. Grant-Joseph B. Noble Company of 1847 to Utah. There were 171 individuals in the company when it began its journey from the outfitting post on the Elkhorn River about 27 miles west of Winder Quarters, Nebraska. They started 19 June 1847 and arrived 2 October 1847. Jacob didn't stay in Utah but headed back to Iowa. There he met Susannah Mendenhall and was married 5 December 1851 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

They came to Utah in an unidentified company in 1852, along with Jacob's brother William's Family:

  • Cloward, Lenora Maria (2)
  • Cloward Rebecca Ann Searles (22)
  • Cloward, Susannah Mendenhall (18)
  • Cloward, William (30)

Jacob Cloward and Susannah Mendenhall settled near Spanish Fork, Utah and then later moved to Moroni, Utah where they had a large farm and became a prominent farming family in Sanpete County.

They had nine children:

  • Jacob Albert, born 6 Jun 18547, died Feb 1913
