About Capt. John Bowne

Find a Grave: Capt John Bowne

Capt. Bowne, a collateral ancestor* of President Abraham Lincoln, was the son and namesake of Capt. John Bowne (1630-1684) and the former Lydia Holmes, who had fled religious persecution in Massachusetts and settled in Middletown, New Jersey, in 1663. A lifelong resident of the town, the younger John Bowne married the former Frances Bowman, but the couple had no children. He died the month before his 51st birthday, and was interred here in the burial ground across from the Baptist Church, which his father had founded.

  • Although the younger Capt. John Bowne and his wife were childless, the 16th US President was descended from his sister, Hannah Bowne Salter, whose daughter, Hannah Salter, married Mordecai Lincoln, Jr., in Monmouth County, New Jersey, circa 1714.
