About Josef Josi Braun

Josi Braun was a talented photographer. He took photos of peasants and every day life. His silver plates were found in the Moravian Museum of Brno, Czechoslovakia, and Ms. Helene Beránková of the Ethnographic Department researched his works and there was an exhibition of Josi’s photographs in the Prague National Museum in May 1999.

Joseph Braun had several famous cousins:

1- One of his cousins married the Grand Duke of Lichtenstein, but died without issue.

2- Another cousin was Victor Adler (b.1852/d.1918) the founder of the Austrian Social Democratic Party. He was a prominent figure in the international labor movement. He was a physician by profession. He was a member of the Austrian Patliament from 1905 to 1918 and foreign minister in the Socialist Government of 1918. His bust is still standing in front of the Austrian Parliament building in Vienna.

3- Victor Adler's son Friedrich Adler (b.1879/d.1960) was a prominent figure in the Austrian labour movement and secretary of the Socialist International.

4- Heinrich Braun (b.1854/d.1927) and his wife Lilly were Josis's cousin as well. Lilly was the daughter of General Von Kretschman and a descebdant from Napoleoan Bonaparte's brother, Jerome Bonaparte. Lilly was an author and Heinrich was one of the founders of the periodical of the German Socialist Democrats "Neue Zelt" in 18883. Their son, Otto Braun, an extremely talented writer was killed in World War I.

5- Heinrich's brother was Adolf Braun (b.1862/d.1929 a German socialist leader who was active in the Social Democratic Party for more 40 years. He was the brother-in-law of Victor Adler.

6- Jose had another cousin, Henrietta Szold (b.1860/d.1945) who was an American. In 1856 her parents emmigrated to Baltimore, Maryland USA. Henrietta's mother was Sophie Schaar (b.1839) and married Benjamin Szold (b.1829/d.1902) the son of Baruch Szold (from Nemiskert) and of Chaila Eudler. Henrietta was the founder of the Hadaassah and the Youth Alliah.
