Sources indicate that Joseph Madden, born about 1757/58/59 had been born in the state of Maryland. The web sites of Ancestry.com, RootsWeb.com, Heritage Quest, FamilySearch.org, and USGenWeb Project have been checked and as of 1 August 2005 no ancestral lines of Maryland families Madden have been found earlier than Joseph.

   A Joseph, age 17, is shown in the household of a Joseph Madding on the 1776 State census of Frederick Co., MD.  One record states Joseph and Elizabeth married in Frederick County, Maryland, another in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.  Joseph(2) and Elizabeth moved to Fleming Co., Kentucky in about 1803.

Page 500 of the Monnett book shows an assignment of Deed of Lease dated 20 Sept 1795, proved and recorded 14 Sept 1795 in Deed Book 10, page 211 of the records of Hampshire County, Virginia.
