Due to his father's untimely death at work while in service at the admiratly headquarters in Tallinn (1871), Karl received an education at the government's (Czar's) expense. He was educated at the Kroonlinn maritime school and served in Liibari and Reval (Tallinn) in the Russian navy as a second class skipper. He later became the constable of the Kunda harbor, then customs inspector and meteorology section head in the Tallinn harbor.

Karl Öpik saatis 20. juunil 1920 saatis Moskvasse Kontroll-Opteerimise komisjoni esimele avalduse saamaks tööle Rostovi komisjoni. Karl Öpiku soov oli seeläbi aidata oma perel Venemaalt Eestisse pääseda. Saaga ERA.36.1.311:11
