About Lynn( Lillian) Hurst
GEDCOM Note
Born in Grodek Jagielonski (sounds like Yagelousky) was originally Austria, became Poland in 1918. Family moved to Budapest in 1916. Returned to Lemberg Austria (now Lvov, Poland) 1918 for a year - Galicia in the Austrian empire (now L'viv, Ukraine)Went to USA 6/20/1920. Arrived in Ellis Island with The Louis Steiger family, his brother Max Schubert (Steiger) & Rose, Louis( a 2ed Louis) & Jennie Schubert and Sam Beck (who later maried Lynn's father's eldest sister Bina). [Confusion because half took their father's name of Schubert, and half took their Mother's name of Steiger.] Her biologic mother died after childbirth of her younger brother. She died of what sounds like renal failure 3 months a few months after the birth. They had a housekeeper, then aged 15(Sarah), who raised the 2 children, later Sarah married Lynn's father and was known as "mother" to all. The fact of Sarah being a stepmother was not told to Lynn's children until Lynn was 70! Stories: Lynn was a teacher, lived home with her folks. Was in love with a fellow who her mother disapproved, was about 26 when she met Lloyd at a "Sammy" fraternaty (Sigma Alpha Mu) party - introduced by her brother,Aaron. Five months later they were married. She continued to keep kosher at home in East Chicago until one day ( after 10 years of marriage) Lloyd went to the Kosher butcher shop to pick up something. He found the store so filthy that he refused to eat anything from there again. So they no longer kept Kosher. But still no pork in the house until Alan, who became so undernourished because of his refusal to eat much, was treated by the Dr. who suggested bacon. That he would eat. On the Kosher line, Mom would have a separate set of Kosher dishes for her folks. They visited E. Chicago rarely, but did come for David's Bar-Mitzvah. Out came the Kosher dishes but they were not good enough for her folks. But then again, nothing Lynn ever did was good enough to please them. Then there is the story of her wedding night. After the honeymoon, because it was Friday, they couldn't leave until after Sabbath. They stayed in the hotel downtown Cleveland. She says that her mother checked the sheets the next morning for "show" to prove that the hyman was broken; i.e. she had remained a virgin. Lynn was very active in a multitude of organizations which centered around the Synagogue. Sisterhood, B'nai Brith Women, Ben Gurion University were all her charities. She was renown for her cooking, elegance of bearing, her hair which was always perfect, and deserts. Then again, she was aloof, and never really mixed with her inlaws. There were always points of feuding with Bernard and June. Her best friends were Bette Friedland and Chucky Burke. Lynn developed Alzheimers at about age 68. She gradually decompensated, would be found lost wandering about town with no idea where she was. Lloyd spent 2 years as her live in nurse, with hired help, until she was in need of total care. It was not until after his death, which is doubtful that she understood, though she did go to his funeral. She spent the last 2 years of her life in a marvelous orthodox nursing home in Boca Raton, until her mind completely failed. The last few months she would respond only to old Yiddish or Jewish melodies and prayers.
