She was the youngest child of Emmanuel Henry Custer and Maria Kirkpatrick Ward Custer.

She married 1st Lieutenant James Calhoun, 7th US Cavalry. He died at the Battle of Little Big Horn, along with her brothers George Armstrong Custer, Thomas Ward Custer and Boston Custer, and her nephew Harry Armstrong Reid.

She later married John H. Maugham in 1904.
