BIOGRAPHY Marguerite was born in 1595, the daughter of Maximilien I de Béthune, 1.duc de Sully, marquis de Rosny, and his second wife Rachel de Cochefilet. On 7 February 1605 she married Henri II de Rohan, duc de Rohan, prince de Léon, comte de Porhoet, son of René II de Rohan, vicomte de Rohan, and Catherine de Parthenay-L'Archeveque. About 1617 they had a daughter Marguerite who would have progeny.
Marguerite de Béthune was considered to have been beautiful but flighty; in 1630 she had given birth to a son Tancrede who closely resembled the duc de Candale, son of the duc d'Epernon. One can suppose that her husband Henri de Rohan knew but kept quiet about it. To his mind, nothing should be known of this 'shameful mother' who produced Tancrede with great secrecy, but legitimising the child would have been at the cost of Marguerite, their legitimate daughter. A long process followed. The mother was 'made respectable' and the union of Marguerite and Henri Chabot, seigneur de Saint-Aulaye, was then confirmed. Marguerite de Béthune died in Paris on 21 October 1660.
