From “Records of the family of Cassels and connexions”

Sir Gilbert Kennedy of Dunure, eldest son of John Kennedy, married, first, Marion, daughter of Sir James Sandilands of Calder, by whom he had three sons, Gilbert, John, and Roland ; and, secondly, Agnes Maxwell, daughter of Sir John Maxwell of Pollok, by his wife, Isabel Lindsay, daughter of Sir James Lindsay of Crawford, by the Princess Egidia, sister of Robert II. The eldest son of Sir Gilbert Kennedy and Agnes Max- well was James, who married the Princess Mary, daughter of Robert III., in 1403, and by her had six sons. James was killed by his brother GILBERT, in consequence of the preference shown to the second family (they having been disinherited to make way for James).

Notes for Marion (Spouse 1)

Sir Gilbert Kennedy had also three illegitimate sons:

1. Gilbert (primogenitus) - Gilbert distinguished himself in the wars in France where he fought under Joan of Arc. He killed his lawful brother, James in a quarrel, and died abroad, apparently without lawful issue.

2. John - John, who is not to be confused with his brother John Kennedy of Blairquhan, is supposed to be the ancestor of the first family of Kennedy of Coif, which soon became extinct.

3. Roland - Roland, the third brother, appears to have been infeft in the lands of Leffnol, in Wigtownshire, and had issue a son, Gilbert.

All three apparently by the same mother, as they are described as brothers-german in the charter already cited, of 27 January 1384-85, where they are called in succession after the lawful heirs-male of their father.
