notes

  • Looking at Torrey's sources, I observe that the name of wife of Thomas Hungerford (1648-1714) is not established between Mary Gray or Mary Green (or even Mary Graves). Mary was "of Narragansett" RI.
  • Mary Gray (dtr. of Mary Winslow and Edward Gray) did not get married and is presumed to have died without issue (per the Parkhurst research, and per the Mayflower Society, following an application submitted, based on the error that she did marry Thomas Hungerford).
  • Apparently, in an LDS document (perhaps a family sheet with an error), and thus in Ancestry.com, Mary Gray is noted as having married Thomas Hungerford. This is incorrect, but it is an error that has exponentially increased from people copying trees.
  • Most genealogies indicate that the wife of Thomas Hungerford was Mary Green. Some sources show that her name was Mary Gray, and that she was the daughter of Edward Gray, the Governor of Narragansetts Plantation in Rhode Island. Those people who wrote that even though the written records looked like the name was Gray, it couldn't be because Edward Gray said he had no daughter.
  • It is a matter of historic public record that Thomas Hungerford and his wife Mary were heavily fined for "fornication before marriage" because their first child arrived too early. It is also a fact that Thomas Hungerford married his Mary at Narragansetts Plantation before bringing her back to Connecticut. The source I believe speculated that Edward Gray disowned his daughter because of early conjugal activity.
  • Unless some heretofore undiscovered document comes to light I'm afraid the answer to what is Mary's last name is will remain unknown.

Life Sketch:

 • From Family Search There was a Maiden name conflict as a result of the "Torrey" record. However, after a deep dive into numerous other records to clarify who this is and there is no "maiden name conflict". This is MARY GRAY, daughter of Edward Gray and Mary Winslow Gray.

# # # # # Torrey says Thomas Hungerford the younger m. Mary Green or Gray, because they had a son named Green Hungerford. [See below added on 27May2021] Per Mayflower Families Through Five Generations James Chilton Vol. 15 pg. 13.

The information given in the Mayflower Chilton book is "ii Mary b. 18 Sept. 1653; living Nov. 1665 but d. bef. 24 Aug. 1681 leaving no issue (not mentioned in settlement of the estate of her father Edward Gray)." There is no other information for Mary Gray and a possible spouse or children.

Hence:

Working out discrepancies apparently caused by confusing different generations of “Mary” and perhaps concluding the name "Rider" was a husband, rather than her middle name.

Mary Chilton [daughter of James and Mrs CHILTON] married John Winslow; they had a daughter named Mary Winslow b. 1628/30 d. 28October1663 at age 35 (see GEDCOM reference below) FS ID #....... who married Edward Gray in Plymouth on 16January1650/51

They had six children, #2 was named “Mary” GRAY b 18 September 1653 d 1681 ("Rider" may have been her middle name but all records indicate this Mary Gray married Thomas A. Hungerford) Source: http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/AMTCitationRedir.aspx?tid=162359948&pi...

Mary Gray married Thomas A. Hungerford Mary Gray's sister - Desire Gray m. Southworth, together they had Mary Southworth who m. Rider (Hence Mary S. Rider was Mary Gray's niece, but not Mary Gray herself)
