About Mary Miller

Some sources, on unknown grounds, identify her as Mary (Hawkins?), widow of James Genn.

Biography

Mary, the wife of James Genn, was probably Mary Hawkins. In 1688 a Mary Hawkins sued James Genn and had him arrested. The suit seems to have been a paternity suit, probably settled by their marriage. The 1703 will of Thomas Matthew mentioned James Genn and his wife Mary.

Mary probably died after 6 May 1703, when she was named in the will of Thomas Matthew. She might have died before 20 April 1707; she was not named as executrix of her husband's estate. However, she is widely reported to have been the wife of John Miller, whom she would have married as a widow.

"On 20 April 1709, a probate of the will of James Genn was granted to Thomas Genn and James Genn. A courthouse fire in 1710 destroyed wills and deeds between 1672 and 1710. Because of this his will was destroyed. It was not rerecorded at a later date by a member of his family. As there are no other Genns in the county records, we will assume that Thomas Genn and James Genn are his sons."

John Miller's will was dated April 15, 1742 and was proved in Essex, VA on 20 December 1743. In his will he named, wife Mary, and children Benjamin, Francis, Simon, Thomas, John, William, Isabella, Margaret (married to James Hoard, referred to as "Howard" in the will), and Mary, wife of George Green.[1]
