In 1653, Goody Knapp, was accused of witchcraft. Goodwife Staples made a statement that she didn't believe and was herself brought under suspicion. Thomas promptly sued the accuser of slander and was awarded damages. Mrs. Staples was accused a second time along with her daughter Mary Harvey and grandaughter Hannah Harvey, but there was insufficient evidence for prosecution.[1]

Mary Staples left a will dated 12 Sept 1696, left bequests to sons Thomas & John; Daus. Mary wife of Josiah Harvey and Hannah wife of John Beach; friend Mary Slawson; grandchildren Hannah Harvey & Mehitabel Fanton; and to Nathan Gold a book. She probably died in Fairfield where she lived. [1]

• Thomas b. Mar 1650/1, if his gravestone has been correctly read. Listed in father's estate.
• Hester b. abt 1656 (She was treated by Winthrop in 1664, age 8); died young
• Hannah b. say 1659; m. 18 Dec 1679 John Beach. John Beach was mentioned in the settlement of Thomas' estate "in the right of his wife"
• John b. abt 1663 (He was treated by Winthrop in 1664, age 6 mos). Listed in father's estate.

Disputed Origins

• Parents cannot be Thomas Porter 1595-1660 and Eunice 1610-1670 disconnected 5/27/2019
• No evidence she was the same person as Mary Royce
