About Matthew Gray Gubler

Matthew Gray Gubler (born March 9, 1980) is an American actor, film director, painter, photographer, editor, and former fashion model. He is best known for his role as the young genius Dr. Spencer Reid in the CBS television show Criminal Minds, of which he has also directed three episodes. Gubler has also appeared in (500) Days of Summer as Joseph Gordon-Levitt's friend Paul. Gubler also is the voice of one of the chipmunks, Simon Seville, in Alvin and the Chipmunks, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked. Gubler directed and created several movies that were mostly filmed in his hometown of Las Vegas as well as New York City, prior to his graduation from NYU.

Gubler is a high school graduate of the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, where he majored in acting, because the school did not offer his first love, film making. He is a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in film directing. He also attended University of California, Santa Cruz. Gubler's parents were both born in Las Vegas and his mother, Marilyn Gubler, was the first woman to serve as Republican state Chairman. His father, John Gubler, is a lawyer. His grandfather Maxwell Kelch was the first president of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and founded Las Vegas' first radio station (KENO). Gubler's sister Laura Dahl is a fashion designer based in New York City. He has a brother named Gray Gubler who was born in 1994, who appeared in the music video for the song Reagan by Whirlwind Heat (which Gubler directed).

Career

While at NYU film school, Gubler was found by a model scout and then worked as a model with DNA Model Management for Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs and American Eagle among others. He was also ranked No. 46 on models.com list of top 50 male models. He has modeled brands such as Burberry, Marc Jacobs, and various others.

After he began modeling, Gubler had an internship for Wes Anderson, who encouraged him to audition for a part in his movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Gubler did, and landed the role of Nico (a.k.a. Intern #1). This led to his role as Dr. Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds. An episode of his show, Criminal Minds, which ended in his character, Spencer Reid, staring down the barrel of a gun, received the highest ratings in the show's history (by episode) at over 26 million viewers.E214[citation not found] While Matthew is a well-known actor in television show Criminal Minds, he also takes part in directing. In some episodes of the show he wears Shuron Ronsir prescription glasses; Gubler is extremely nearsighted.

He also had a small role in the 2006 film RV as the disreputable Joe Joe and voiced the character of Simon (the smart Chipmunk) in 2007's Alvin and the Chipmunks and again in 2009 and 2011 for Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked, alongside Jason Lee as Dave, Justin Long as Alvin, and Jesse McCartney as Theodore. He played the voice of Winsor in Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur. He also appeared as the main character in How to Be a Serial Killer.

Filmmaking

While making The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Gubler made the documentary entitled Matthew Gray Gubler's Life Aquatic Intern Journal, a behind-the-scenes view of the making of the film, which was later included in the Criterion Collection DVD release. Gubler has directed and starred in a series of self-deprecating mockumentaries named Matthew Gray Gubler: the Unauthorized Documentary in which he parodies Hollywood behavior, which are filmed while on the set of Criminal Minds. A follow-up "Matthew Gray Gubler: The Authorized Documentary" was also made, although only one episode is currently available.

He directed, edited, and co-produced the music video for "Don't Shoot Me Santa" by the rock band The Killers.

He has also directed the episode "Mosley Lane" which was season 5 of Criminal Minds (5x16), which originally aired March 3, 2010, along with the episode "Lauren" (6x18), which aired a year later on March 16, 2011. The episode "Lauren" included the exit of Criminal Minds series regular Paget Brewster, who maintains a friendship with Gubler outside of work on the show. Brewster specifically asked Gubler to direct her last episode for the show, although it was announced later that she would return for season seven. His latest Criminal Minds episode as a director, "Heathridge Manor" (7x19), just aired on April 4, 2012.
