There is no record of a Mathias Swesey in Samuel's father's will.

The information on Mathias applies to Samuel's son.

This information comes from "The Salmon Records", showing marriages in Suffolk County, NY. It also shows a Mathias Sweezey marrying Elizabeth Tinker in 1728, it could be the same person marrying a second time. For now I will show Elizabeth as the second wife.

I have another source that lists this person as Matthew, and his father as either John or Joseph. This listing also shows two wives, Eunice Case and Elizabeth Tinker.

The Salmon Records also show a child of Mathias Sweezey dying in Sept 1729. I am assuming that it is referring to this Mathias Sweezey. The Salmon Records also lists another son of Mathias Sweezey dying in 1732. They would both be the children of Elizabeth Tinker.

I found a note in the L.I. Forum that lists the names of the Militia from Bridgehampton in 1715, and one of the names is 'Matthias Sweary", I believe that it is this person. He is under Capt Joseph Tooker's command. If this is the same person (and I am quite sure it is), then Mathias could not have been born any later than 1698, as he would only be 17 years old in 1715. My guess is that he was probably born a few years prior to 1698.

Based on the Salmon Records, it would appear that this Mathias was still living in Southampton, Suffolk Co., NY by as late as 1732.

Documentation indicates that Mathias' brother Samuel, and Mathias' son Mathias had moved to Hunterdon and Lebanon Counties in New Jersey by 1741. Documentation also indicates that his son Mathias then moved to Cumberland Co. PA in 1768. The last documentation I could find was in 1732, when he was still living on Long Island.

I am theorizing that this Mathias Sweezey is the one who appears in Hunterdon County, NJ in 1740, because it would appear that any son of his would probably be too young to be a head of household in 1740. But this is only speculation, it is theorectically possible that this Mathias had a son named Mathias who was born as early as 1719, and who would then have been 21 years old in 1740 and could be the Mathias who was living in Hunterdon County, but it is more likely that this is the Mathias I see in Hunterdon County, NJ in 1740, and so I will assume that this Mathias also migrated to New Jersey around 1737 with the rest of the Sweezey families.

B.F. Swasey does not show any information on this family. B. F. Swasey has no information on the family of Mathias' father Samuel. "The Swezeys of Huntington" also does not mention the family of Samuel. Also, no information on Samuel's family in the "Genealogy of the Swezey Family" by the Rev. F.P. Swezey. Nor does Richard M. Bayles' "Swezey History" mention Samuel or his family.

I just found a large, beautifully documented "Sweazea" genealogy on the Internet that shows this person as the Mathias that started the Pennsylvania branch, as well as the Southern "Sweazea" branch. Since I have no information on this branch at all, I am going to just attach this file to my database. I do not know who the author is, but I will search for their name in order to give proper credit for this well researched information.

I believe the name of the person who shows Mathias as the son of Mathias and Eunice Case, and who ties in the 'Sweazea' family to our original ancestor John Swasey is a 'Sammy Williams'. He did a beautiful job on documenting the ancestors of Mathias.

I found a Mathew Sweany on the Muster Roll of Capt Alexander Smith's Company in 1758. I do not remember ever seeing a 'Sweeney' on Long Island this early, so it is probably Matthew Sweezey. It could be this Mathias/Matthew, but he would have been almost 60 at the time, so more than likely, it would be his son. _________________________________________________________________ Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey Reign of George II 1727-1760 Vol 67 # 1 Albertson vs Swayze. Middlesex sessions, March term 1751. Nicholas Albertson complains of Matthias Swayze, of Bethlehem, Hunterdon County, who on 23 January 1748/9 became indebted to him by bond in the penal sum of 90 pound for 45 pound debt which remains unpaid. At the time the bond was executed, Albertson was described as being of Bethlehem, millright. _________________________________________________________________

The above legal document could pertain to Mathias or his son Mathias Jr., depending on the birth date of Mathias Jr.

Except for the above, which I believe pertains to Mathias Jr., I have not seen any documentation that that shows this Mathias living in New Jersey.

I have just been in contact with a fellow researcher named John Swesey who is a descendant of Mathias, and his research is extremely interesting and well documented. His research shows that Mathias had the following children: Mathias (c. 1731), Amos (c. 1733), and Elijah (c. 1736). This explains a number of questions I have had with the information given in B.F. Swasey, who says that Amos is the son of Barnabas Swayze. With information I have from other researchers, I show Aaron (1737) also a son of Mathias. John Swesey shows that Mathias moved to New Jersey in 1737 along with his cousin Judge Samuel Swayze.

There is much speculation regarding this Mathias Sweezey, and the Mathias Sweezey who moved to Pennsylvania around 1765. Technically, this Mathias is young enough to be the same person who was living in Hunterdon County, New Jersey in 1740, had trouble paying his debts in 1750, moved to Pennsylvania in the 1760's, and had sons born in the 1750' and 1760's, but the dates would fit better if that Mathias Sweezey was of a later generation, and so I show that this Mathias Sweezey had a son named Mathias who was born around 1725, and that it was this Mathias Jr. who lived in Hunterdon County, NJ and later moved to Pennsylvania with his 4 sons (John, Mathias, Daniel and George). But it is all speculation, mostly based upon the fact that "Mathias" is not a common name for the Sweezey family, and when I find two of them, I assume they are father and son.

After further research, I have a better solution to the Mathias Sr. and Mathias Jr. confusion. I have no documentation that this Mathias Sweezey every moved to NJ nor any documentation that he has a son named Mathias. I had just assumed that because of the Mathias Sweezey I found living in Hunterdon County in 1749, and in Pennsylvania in the 1760's. I knew that Mathias was too young to be this Mathias, but the Mathias Sweezey supposedly living in Hunterdon County in 1740, appeared to be too young to be Mathias Jr. who was born around 1725. But, if I just use the documented dates I found, than all the references to a Mathias Sweezey in early NJ and Pennsylvania could be for just one Mathias Sweezey - the one I show as Mathias Jr. (c. 1725 - c. 1792). What if Mathias Jr. is not the son of Mathias Sr., but the brother of Mathias Sr.: John Sweezey (c. 1705 - 1761)? I have documentation that a John Sweezey was living in NJ in the early 1740's, and probably moved their with Judge Samuel Swayze who was a cousin of John Sweezey. I believe that it was this John Sweezey who was the father of Mathias Jr. (c. 1725 - c. 1792), and not Mathias Sr.

This would mean that the John Sweezey who moved to NJ in 1737 had a son named Mathias (named after his brother Mathias Sr.), and it was this son Mathias who was documented in Hunterdon County in 1749, and later in Pennsylvania. It would also explain why Mathias Jr. named his first born "John" - his named him after his father. I like this scenario and will pursue this line.
