About Norman Marshall
Norman Marshall dies in London A former Invercargill man , Mr Norman Marshall who became a millionaire after establishing a publishing company which started by selling encyclopaedias, died in London on Friday aged 54.
Mr Marshall began his working life as a journalist with the Southland Times in 1945. In 1946 he joined the Dominion in Wellington and later The Auckland Star before he went to South Africa where he joined the world wide publishing firm of Pernell's. After a period of salesmanship he became the firms South African Manager before being transferred to Head Office London in 1961 from where he travelled to many parts of the world While working as an executive for Purnell's London he and a colleague decided to form a new publishing company, Marshall Cavendish, selling an encyclopaedia in serial form called 'Mind Alive' This proved a worldwide success and from there the company embarked on many other enterprises, producing a multitude of publications in many languages.
Mr Marshall is survived by his South African born wife Shirley and a daughter and three sons. He is also survived by his parents Mr and Mrs James Marshall of Invercargill, his brother Ray, of Invercargill and his sister Mrs Daphne Smith of Morton Downs.
