Phillip de Valognes, Chamberlain of William I, King of Scots, died on 5 November 1215 and was buried with honour at Melrose Abbey, Roxburghshire, in the Kingdom of Scotland: "[A. D. 1215] Nonas Novembris [Nov. 5] obiit Philippus de Valoniis, camerarius domini Willelmi regis Scottorum, qui apud Melros delatus in capitulo monachorum honorifice eft tumulatus".
