About Rabbi Solomon Sassoon

Solomon David Sassoon (August 1915, London – May 1985) was an educator, Rabbi, philanthropist, fundraiser and collector of Jewish manuscripts.

Solomon David Sassoon was born into the wealthy Sassoon family. His family hired Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler as a private tutor, and the two completed study of the Talmud together. Sassoon made original contributions to linguistic analysis, philosophy, physiology and Biblical criticism. In 1953 and again in 1964, he declined invitations to become Chief Rabbi of Israel. His varied interests and literary output were maintained until his death in May 1985.
