About Rebecca Hobby

Rebecca REYNOLDS

  • BIRTH: 1656, Stamford, Fairfield Co., CT
  • DEATH: AFT APR 1693, Greenwich, Fairfield Co., CT
  • Father: Jonathan REYNOLDS
  • Mother: Rebecca HUSTED
  • Family 1 : Walter BUTLER MARRIAGE: Greenwich, Fairfield Co., CT (probably)

Rebecca was possibly the daughter of Jonathan Reynolds and Rebecca Heusted. According to Jacobus in his 1956 article, there is some circumstantial evidence that she may have been the daughter of Jonathan Reynolds, Sr. and Rebecca Huested.[1]

Her birth date, 1657, at Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut, is the date and place of Rebccca, daughter of Jonathan Reynolds and Rebecca Heusted. If we use the wife of Peter Clapton and Brown's head stone, and subtract her age, 75th year, from date of death, 1730, she was born c. 1655.

Marriages and Children

Rebecca is supposed to have married three times.

Rebecca married to Walter Butler.[1] Walter died in April 1693 at Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut.[1] According to Jacobus, it "seems possible" that she married twice more: as her 2nd, c. 1694 to Pater Clapham (d 18 Feb 1697/8), of Norwalk and as her 3rd, by 1717 to Unknown Brown.[1]

According to Jacobus, based on the dates of Walter Butler's daughter's marriages, they were probably born between 1680 and 1693.[1]

Children of Rebecca and Walter Butler:[1]

Elizabeth Butler; mar 18 Apr 1700 Benjamin Knapp Abigail Butler; mar 23 Jun 1703 Daniel Marshall
Rebecca Butler; mar 25 Apr 1706 Daniel Smith
Sarah Butler; mar Elisha Mead
a daughter Butler; mar Peter Brown, Jr. of Rye
Esther or Hester Butler; mar 7 Dec 1713 Jonathan Mead
Children of Rebecca and Peter Clapham:[1]

Rebecca Clapham b 1694
Elizabeth Clapham b 1696
Peter Clapham b 1698
Significantly, Jonathan Reynolds and Joshua Knapp of Greenwich were appointed guardians of the three Clapham children on 22 January 1702/3. Her husband, Clapham, was of Norwalk, so there must have Joshua Knapp's wife was Elizabeth Reynolds, who was the younger sister of Jonathan Reynolds. It would make sense if Rebecca was the older sister of Jonathan and Elizabeth Reynolds.[1]

Death and Legacy

If this wife of Clapham and then Brown was Walter's wife, Rebecca, her head stone states she died 3 June 1730, in her 75th year.[1]

Born BET 1655 AND 1657. Connecticut, United States. Imported only 1655 from Birth Date and marked as uncertain.
