About Reverend Hugh Daniel Keith
Rev. Hugh Keith was known as "Huey" and "H.D." His parents were William Keith and Delilah Ring.
Hugh Keith first married Phebe Rines, and they had at least ten children.
In the summer of 1861, two of Hugh and Phebe's children died. That fall, in September of 1861, Hugh abandoned his wife and children, and he ran off with a young girl who lived down the road, named Phebe Counts. They eloped on September 11, 1861, and then they took off for Breathitt County, Kentucky. They settled near Jackson, and Hugh continued to work as a preacher. His new congregation had no idea what had happened back in Virginia. His new church was the High Top Baptist Church.
Hugh and his second wife Phebe had at least ten children. Some of his children from his first marriage followed him to Breathitt County and lived nearby.
