Richard Bellingham was the 8th governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He served three terms.
Wives:
- Elizabeth Backhouse- Following the death of his first wife, Elizabeth, Richard married his ward
- Penelope Pelham, performing the ceremony himself- which was against the law.
Bellingham Cary House house was built in 1659 by Governor Bellingham and used as his summer house till his death. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
