Here is an example of an ad for a Twiss clock

Twiss clock from mid-1800s Quebec John Sewell, The Windsor Star Published: Saturday, August 04, 2012 Q I'm sending pictures of the beautiful grandfather clock, inherited from my in-laws. It is 227 cm tall (89.5 inches). They bought it, at auction, 60 years ago and paid about $100. It isn't working now, but I believe it could be. We have all of the original large and small weights. The face is hand painted and says J & H Twiss, Montreal. Do you have any information about the value of this clock. I always read your articles in the newspaper. - Julie, Mississauga A You have a Twiss grandfather clock, certainly, made in Quebec. Hiram Twiss, and his five sons had their main clock factory in Meriden, Conn. and a branch plant in Montreal and another in Nashville, Tenn. Most, if not all, of the Twiss clock movements were made of cherry wood (gears included) and designed, when wound, to run a little over a day. The clock cases were always pine. The Twiss family made clocks in Quebec from about 1822 to 1851. This dates your clock to that 30-year span. Twiss clocks are not rare, but original grain-painted examples are hard to find and fetch a few thousand dollars. There may be some paint touch-ups to the minute lines on the face of your clock, but the pretty fruit and basket motif appears in original condition. I see that the case has been re-finished. Still, this handsome clock should bring in $1,000.
