Samuel was the son of John Staples, Sr., of Kittery, York County, Maine and Mary Dixon Staples of Eliot, York County, Maine. Mary and John were married in October 1696 in Kittery, York County, Maine. Mary and John had ten children. They were: Hezekiah Staples, Sr., was born on 11 February 1702; Solomon Staples was born on 29 June 1705; Samuel Staples was born on 11 April 1707; Hannah Staples was born on 08 February 1709 or 1710; Thomas Staples was born on 09 January 1711; Mary Staples was born on 21 January 1714; Anne Staples was born on 10 March 1716; John Staples, Jr., was born on 02 January 1717; Elizabeth Staples was born on 11 February 1718 or 1719; and Mark Staples was born on 31 October 1725. All the children were born in Kittery, York County, Maine.
Samuel was married twice. Samuel married Patience Moore on 02 October 1727 in York, York County, Maine. Patience and Samuel had four children. They were: Samuel (twin) Staples was born on 29 April 1738 in Kittery, York County, Maine; John (twin) Staples was born on 29 April 1738 in Kittery, York County, Maine; Ebenezer Staples was born on 14 June 1740 in Kittery, York County, Maine; and Elizabeth Staples was born in 1741. Samuel married Mercy Cane in 1745. Mercy and Samuel had three children. They were: Patience Staples was born on 09 July 1748; Moses Staples was born on 29 September 1753 in Hancock County, Maine; and Joshua Staples was born in 1755 in Phillipstown, York County, Maine.
Note: Samuel Staples removed his family from Deer Isle to Swans Island in 1764. While fishing with others from Swans Island during the American Revolution, Samuel Staples was impressed into service by a British frigate. He was never heard from again, nor have any records of his whereabouts or fate been uncovered. According to the Bangor Historical Magazine, volume 5, when the British evacuated Bagaduce, Maine, he was seized and carried off on a "Man of War" vessel and utilized as a pilot. Once the Penobscot Bay was cleared, it is presumed that he was shot and thrown overboard.
Burial: Body lost at sea Specifically: Probably kidnapped. Later, shot and thrown overboard.
