About Sgt. (USA) George Congo
- Served in Company A, 22nd US Colored Infantry from 8 Jan., 1864 to 16 Oct., 1865
- Some of the Congo family are buried at the Slate Hill cemetery along the Delaware in Bucks County Pa, as he is: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/12602049/george-c-congo "aged 55 years"
- There is a poorly handwritten ledger of those in the 45th Infantry, also a black regiment. Included is a Congo who enlisted at age 19 in Philadelphia. His given name seems to be written as Leaeey (sic). Might this actually be <Leroy> or <Leon>?. Might he be a brother of George, even a twin, or a cousin?
- I have found others named Leon Congo and have put them on GENi, but they are from a later PA era. {MMvB July 2020}
- here is another resource for "Leaeey" = 45th Colored Infantry Regt.
- ~• before the war, William lived near another future Black Civil War soldier William Ganges (USA)
- note the Ganges and Congo families are related by marriage in the prior generation...
