Sir Robert "Richard" Ogle, Knt.[1] Baron of Hepple, [2][3] may have been born at Callerton on 08 December 1353.[4] Ogle (1902), agrees with the month, day and location, but says he was born in 1351 ... adding that he was baptized in Ponteland.

According to Froissart, Ogle prepared for the Battle of Otterburn at Newcastle with Sir Ralph Lumley, Sir Matthew Redman, captain of Berwick, Sir Thomas Grey, Sir Thomas Holton, Sir John Felton, Sir John Lilleburn, Sir Thomas Abingdon, Baron Hilton, and Sir John Coppledike.[5]

He was already married to Joan de Heaton,[6] by the time he was twenty-one.[7] As daughter and co-heir of Sir Alexander de Heton, Knt., Joan's property went to Richard in the 12th year of Richard II's reign (c. 1389).[6]

Because his father died prematurely,[6][8] Richard became his grandfather's heir in 1363.[2][6][9] Part of his inheritance included Robert Bertram's Bothal castle and manor,[9] but his grand-mother[3] -- Helen Betram, Baroness of Bothall -- continued to live there. So Richard didn't really get it until the death of her last husband, David de Holgrave (d.1406).[6]

Sadly, he died just three years later in 1409 ... triggering an inheritance battle between his sons:[6][10][11] heir Robert (d.1436), and the distinguished John Bertram ... who not only had the legal claim,[10] but actually lived there.[3][6][9]
