Biographical Summary
"Sir Windham Carmichael-Anstruther, Baronet [S. 1700 and G.B. 1798], of Anstruther and Elie House, as also of Carmichael and Westraw aforesaid, uncle and h., b. 9 March 1793, at Lincoln's Inn Fields in the parish of St. Clement Danes ; ed. at Eton, 1808 ; sometime an officer in the Coldstream Guards ; suc. to the Baronetcies and to the very considerable estates of the family, 31 Oct. 1831 ; Major in the 1st Lanark Militia, 1831. He was not long in possession before he became inextricably involved, and at length, after many years, succeeded in breaking the entail of his Anstruther estates, and sold them in 1856, together with the mansion of Elie House, to the brothers Baird [for £145,000, but he] still possessed the great Carmichael estates in Lanarkshire, which are in value equal to those he alienated. He m. firstly in 1824, Meredith Maria, 2d da. of Charles Wetherell. She d. 10 April 1841, at Brighton, aged 37. He m. secondly (a month later), 10 May 1841, Anne Constance, da. of Allen Williamson Grey. She d. 21 June 1856, at Boulogne, aged 44. He m. thirdly, 30 Sep. 1859, Mary Anne, 2d da. of John Parsons. He d. 15 Sep. 1869, at Boulogne, in his 77th year. His widow living 1904."
