About Truda M.J. Smytheman

                                                 MARY TRUDA JOSEPHINE SMYTHEMAN  (nee Richards)
                                                                      1913  <nowiki>------------------</nowiki> 1995
      Truda, as she was always called, was the eldest child of William (Will) and Mary Richards (nee Crotty). Truda was born on 21st February 1913, at the family home at 9 Bradford St., Parnell, Auckland. The family had many moves, as they rented the homes that they lived in. Truda went to Remuera School. most of the time, except for a short time went Edendale School, when they could not rent a house in Remuera. The family moved out to Papatoetoe in 1925, after buying a section in Allenby Rd. Papatoetoe, Truda went to Papatoetoe District School. Truda  competed in the Auckland Primary School Championships at the Auckland Domain , and won the 50yds 10 &under 11 yrs sprinting in 1924, and in 1926 won the 75yds skipping race under 13yrs. and for her efforts received 2 beautiful medals. Truda went to St. George's Anglican Church, in Landscape Rd. Papatoetoe, and joined in many of the church activities, as did her husband to be, many years later, who was Vic Smytheman, Truda had a short time at Epsom Girls Grammar School, until her father took her out of school, as he had found her employment at Farmers Trading Company, where he  himself worked.
   Truda  worked in the Furnishing Department, at the Farmers T.C., up until the time of her marriage. Truda also belonged to the Girl Guides,  and much later, helped in the reforming of the movement once again. Truda also belonged to the Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic & Cycling Club, and was the Ladies Champ for one year she also had a cup for the Relay in 1929. Truda also played hockey,  for Papatoetoe Ladies' Hockey Club, the club won all the trophies in the Junior Grade, even though the club had only been formed the previous year(1928), being joint holders of the Junior Championship that year. The Bernecker Cup was one by Papatoetoe after beating the Techinal Past Student's team in the final. In addition to the cups, medals, were presented to the following team members, Misses Violet O'Hara (Captain), Truda Richards, Nora Stelling, Estelle Snelling, Margaret Baird, Louis KIngsford, Edith Mayall, Leah Roseveare, Phyllis Duncan, Mavis Gubb, Dot Leighton, & Joan Culpan, (reserve) In 1930, it was reported that the Annual Ball of the Papatoetoe Hockey Club, was held  in the Papatoetoe Town Hall,  Miss T Richards wore and electric blue taffeta frock, and also at the same venue in 1931 another ball was held at the same venue.
  Truda married  aged 23 years old to Victor Richard Smytheman of Papatoetoe on the 9th December 1936.
 Truda also  was a  member of the Papatoetoe Lawn Tennis Club as was Vic, she was also a Brown Owl (Brownies) at Papatoetoe. Truda also  was a member of the Grange Golf Club for 1 year. In 1953 Truda joined the Papatoetoe Women's Bowling Club, and played there until  Vic & Truda moved to St. Heliers' Bay, and then joined the  Mission Bay Women's Bowling Club, where at one stage Truda was the President.
 Whilst in Papatoetoe Truda was on many Committees and organizations , she was the Treasurer of the Plunket Society, also on the Hospital Auxillary (Middlemore Hospital) for many years. the Honouring of Age committee, Meals on Wheels, Mothers' Union (St. George's Church), Luncheon Club,( former employees of the Farmer's Trading Company,) held at the Farmers T.C.
  As well as all this, Truda helped Vic her husband, in the family Four Square Store, that Vic's father Thomas Smytheman, had started in 1929 , and  later on Vic changed the business to Smytheman's Hardware Store, which was situated at 7 Shirley Rd., Papatoetoe.
Truda and Vic had two children the eldest being their daughter Dale Patricia, and their son James Lane Smytheman.
   Vic her husband died in 1975, and Truda continued to live in St. Helier's'Bay, until about 1993, when Truda moved to a Retirement Village on the North Shore, until she passed away on November 12 1995.
