About Thomas Coffin
Thomas Coffin joined the Birkenhead late in 1850 or early in 1851. He was on duty as the man at the wheel when the troopship struck the rock. He was coxswain at the first cutter, which contained Dr. Bowen, the staff surgeon, and a number of men from the wreck.
