About Sir Thomas Forster, III, Knight, 9th Gov., Sheriff of Northum

THE DATES FOR THOMAS ARE VERY CONFUSING, REFERENCES ARE LISTING SEVERAL WHICH DO NOT MATCH UP WITH HIS CHILDREN'S DATES

Sir Thomas Forster IV. B.1477 in England. D. March 4, 1526 in England. Born at Adderstone (Adderstone was variously known as Herdiston, Ederston, Eddrestone, Etherston, Etherstan and Etherstone), he married Dorothy, the daughter of Robert, Lord Ogle, and he was created Marshall of Berwick-on-Tweed by King Henry VIII. Whilst there he was given command of a troop of sixty cavalrymen just before the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513, a great battle in which he and his troops played a valiant part. He was the father of eight children. He was described at that time as “The Chief of one of the most numerous Border Clans” and, quite apart from its humorous inference regarding his prolifically fecund father and grandfather, it appears to have been an actual fact. His eldest son became the next Thomas. But his younger son, John, was to become a notorious figure on the Border Marches. (Note that whilst John was born an Adderstone Forster, he also heads up the Bamburgh list as Sir John Forster of Bamburgh.)

Sir John Forster (1502?-1602) was an English military commander and Warden of the Middle Marches.

Born about 1501, he was son of 'Sir Thomas Forster (d. 1527) of Etherston, Northumberland, marshal of Berwick, and his wife Dorothy, daughter of Robert Ogle, 4th Baron Ogle'. Trained from early youth in border warfare, he was in August 1542 put in command of Harbottle Castle with a garrison of a hundred men. He fought at the battle of Solway Moss, 23 November 1542, under Thomas Wharton, 1st Baron Wharton, and claimed to have captured Robert Maxwell, 5th Baron Maxwell; Cuthbert Tunstall and Suffolk, however, determined that Maxwell's real captor was Edward Aglionby.[link currently leads to a wrong person]
