About William Farrar, of Ewood

William Farrar was the third owner of Ewood Hall, passed to him after the death of his father Henrie in 1548. Note that the spelling of the sons' last name changed with the will. After his death, the estate went to his oldest son Henry, who was quite prominent. Henry was the founder of the Heath Grammar School in Skircoat, and as a Justice of the Peace tried cases in Westminster Hall. His legal career led to his untimely death in 1610, when an argument with another justice led to his fatal stabbing. Henry left no children and his brother John inherited all his vast estates including Ewood.

Ewood Hall, Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire.

The property was formerly owned by the Okes family, but in 1471 Ewood and its lands were conveyed by the owner Edmund Pylkington to Henry Ferror, or Farrer.

It was Henry, with his brothers John and Hugh, who gave two acres of land at Skircoat for the building of Heath Grammar School, and he obtained at his own expense the charter for the foundation of the school. He was murdered at Westminster in 1610.
